There have always been military bases in Northwest Florida. The earliest coastal forts were built to protect Spanish settlements from naval invasions by the French and British. Today the area proudly supports Pensacola Naval Air Station, Tyndall Air Force Base, Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field, Duke Field, and the Naval Surface Warfare Center.
